Halloween is 22 days away!

Hard  to believe that Halloween is 22 days away! The children are getting excited about what costume they are going to where and how much candy they will get Trick or Treating! There are some safety tips that I would like to share with you. Please make sure an adult accompanies young children. Also, check the candy before you let your child eat it. Make sure that the costume fits properly-not to long or they might trip and fall down. Also, make sure that they can see out of a mask! A glow stick is something every trick or treater should be carrying with them on Halloween night! Not only will it help the child see,but it will also help people driving cars see them! As far as older children-make sure they Trick or Treat in a group and they stick together! There is always safety in numbers! Leave your outdoor lights on so the Trick or Treater's can see a clear path to your door. Make sure your outdoor decorations are not in the way-you don't want anyone having an accident on your property! Please if you are an adult attending a Halloween party, and you have been drinking, have someone drive you home or call a cab! Hope everyone has a Happy and safe Halloween!  Susan's La Bella Baskets: http://www.mylabellabaskets.com/susans.html

History of Halloween & the story of the Jack-O'-Lantern & more!

Halloween dates back two thousand years with the Celtic festival of Samhain (sow-in). It was a harvest festival that celbrated the end of one year and the beginning of a new one,and to remember the dead. For the celebrstion the Celts dressed in costumes. They spent the night before, being mischieveous and trying to cause trouble! In the 19th century, the witch became the symbol of Halloween,as did her black cat. Originally, Halloween was called All Hallow's Eve,but was shortened to Halloween. The Ghost is another symbol of Halloween-All Soul's Day. November the 1st, is All Saints Day. In the Christian religion, it was originally called "All Hallows Day."

The Jack-O'-Lantern is from an old irish myth. Stingy Jack drank with the devil, whom Jack made promise not to take his soul. When Stingy Jack showed up at the Gates of Hell, the Devil  sent him away. So Jack could see in the dark, the devil gave him a glowing coal for light. Jack put the glowing coal inside a turnip, and is said to roam the earth. Jack-O'-Lantern originally meant a night watchman,or a man with a lantern, this dates back to the mid-17th century.

So many Halloween traditions and symbols come from a long time ago! Interesting! The colors of Halloween are orange and black. Orange being associated with the Fall Harvest and black with the darkness of winter to come. Trick or Treat-going door to door is similar to the poor going from house to house begging for food on October 31st.

Do you remember collecting money for UNICEF while Trick or Treating. This began in 1950,when children in Philadelphia decorated milk cartons and collected money for less fortunate children. UNICEF increases public awareness and raises funds to provide health care, nutrition, immunizations, clean water for children around the world!
Hope you have enjoyed reading about the History of Halloween, the Jack-O'-Lantern and more!

History of St. Patrick's Day

We all know that this holiday is signified by the color green! The food, the drink, the Shamrock. Green is worn in rememberance of Ireland. St. Patrick is honored as the savior of Ireland. A relgious man, he spoke to the Irish people of a better life and freedom from bondage. He used the Shamrock to explain the Trinity-the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Irish honor St.Patrick for their freedom. Celebration of the holiday came to America in 1737, and was first celebrated in Boston. The Irish Troops serving in the Bristish Military started the celebration. It was a show of patriotism and was where the very first St.Patrick's Day  Parade was held in what later bceame the United States of America. Actually, the celebration of St. Patrick's Day has spread worldwide. St. Patrick himself was the perfect example of a gift giver. He was constantly giving randoms ascts of kindness to strangers and never accepted anything in return! A true gift giver!!! Some of the ways  the holiday is celebrated here in the US are: Chicago, Indianapolis & San Antonio dye their main canals green. Savannah,Georgia dyes all it's city fountains green. Many cities, including New York, paint the parade route in green. The traditonal food for the holiday is the corned beef, cabbage & potato. The traditional drink is beer dyed green. The Irish Soda Bread is also popular fare for St. Patrick's Day! This is just a little bit of the tradtions and history of this holiday! Happy St. Patrick's Day to all!
My next blog entries are going to be about Brides,Grooms and getting ready for the Wedding. The "Wedding Season" is just around the corner!

Dating Anniversary Gifts

The Wedding Anniversary list for gift giving is very well known, but what about couples who are dating? It is common for dating couples to exchange gifts on a monthly, yearly anniversary of when they first met or had their first date. Here are a few tips. At one month, candy & sweets, dinner at a favorite retaurant,a plush animal,or a t-shirt or a cap that is related to a mutual interest. Three months: A CD ,DVD or a book, concert tickets or maybe a magazine subscription. At six months: a trendy watch or thoughtful piece of jewelry that is not too expensive. A perfume or Cologne gift. At one year: Do something fun. Make a scrapbbook of your first year together.Year two: Personalized items, fine jewelry and gifts that have a more intimate expression. :Year three: Travel together. Year Four: Start a hobby together. Now,if you are still  dating five years or more,it is time to put "a ring on it". By now you should really know if this is Ms. or Mr. Right, and if the answer is no,it is time to move on! February is the month when LOVE is in the air! As always, would love for you to explore my online store at:  http://www.mylabellabaskets.com/susans.html

Kiwanis supports children's causes. So,indirectly my donation goes to help children through Kiwanis and my store Susan's La Bella Baskets. Susan's La Bella Baskets: What NOT to buy your girlfriend!

Susan's La Bella Baskets: What NOT to buy your girlfriend!: For many guys, buying a gift for their girlfriend for a birthday, holiday or a special occasion can really bring on the anxiety attacks. Well...

What NOT to buy your girlfriend!

For many guys, buying a gift for their girlfriend for a birthday, holiday or a special occasion can really bring on the anxiety attacks. Well, here is what you should not buy her! Definetly avoid items designed for cooking, cleaning or everday chores. Giving a gift of this sort isn't very romantic. Afterall, she is your girlfriend-make it romantic! Avoid those Kiosk tables in the aisles of department stores that have the boxed jewelry and the perfume sets. It will give your girlfriend the impression that you really did not give much thought to what to give her,and that you bought the first thing you spotted. On the otherhand, don't buy  something so expensive that if things suddenly do not work out, your stuck with a large credit card bill! Now, we all know that you want a big screen TV, but does she? You want the fancy new barbecue, but is that what she wants or what you want? Remember, this is a gift for her-it's not abot what you want.Avoid a gift suggesting she needs room for improvement. There is a big difference between a gift certificate for a  makeover and a one to a spa! Exercise equipment,or a self-improvement book is really not going to go over very well either. It implies that you are not happy with her just the way she is. Buying clothing is another no-no.Women spend hours picking out clothes and trying them on to make sure they fit. If you buy the wrong size-either too big or too small, you will lose either way.  Don't wait till the last minute to make your purchase. If you need suggestions, don't be afraid to ask her friends or even family members what she likes. If you get desparate and decide to give her a gift card, make it a generic one and insert it inside a romantic greeting card appropriate for the occasion.I hope these tips are helpful. Keep in mind that you can find gifts for your girlfriend at Susan's La Bella Baskets at http://www.mylabellabaskets.com/susans.html

Choosing a Valentine's Day Gift!

Before you decide to purchase a gift for your special someone for Valentine's Day, it might be good idea to take a realistic look at what stage is your relationship. Are you just dating,in a long term relationship or maybe married or living together? You just don't want to send the "wrong message" through the gift you give.Once you have defined what stage your relationship is in,then you are ready to shop! Don't buy flowers on plastic sheaths-these definetly send the message that you purchased them at a grocery store! Gag gifts can be fun-just don't go too far and cause embarassment on both your parts. Avoid practical gifts, after all  this is a day to celebrate your special relationship! Here are some tips. If the relationship is new or newer, why not send a Cookie Bouquet or a large Valentine's Fortune Cookie with a personalized message inside. Well, gentelmen,as you well know Valentine's Day is coming up on February 14th! Here are some tips for buying gifts for your special someone not only on Valentine's Day but for other occasions as well-Birthday,Anniversary and any other occasion, where you need to buy a gift for your special someone in your life. The first thing to do is listen for clues as to what she may want. Words such as "I would love to have that" is a really good clue! Look for clues. Does she collect anything? may be you can find something to add to what she is collecting. Make the gift meaniful-personalize the gift, make it special just for her! Some great ideas for Valentine's Day and other Occasions are: flowers(don't buy them in a grocery store, have them sent to her),Spa Gift Baskets, Personalize a gift basket with a special saying on a ribbon, a Cookie Bouquet for Valentine's Day or for her Birthday. Whatever you do, do not procrastinate! Buy the gift ahead and have it delivered as close to the special occasion as possible! If you procrastinate, you will wind up just buying anything quickly that may not be very meaningful. At Susan's La Bella Baskets store, you can leisurely browse through the store and order online 24/7,365 at: http://www.mylabellabaskets.com/susans.html

Valentine's Day originated from a Roman Fertility Festval called Lupercalia and was on the 14th of February. This date marked the transition from winter into spring. During the festival, boys drew names of girls out of an urn. This determined who their partner was for the festivities, and they exchanged gifts. The same day is believed to be when birds chose their mates. Valentine's Day has been considered the official mating day for centuries! Before the 1500's the word Valentine represented the person whose name was chosen to be someone's sweetheart for the festivities. The name also became associated with a piece of parchment with a person's name written on it.In the 1800's, the word Valentine was known as a letter or peom given to a special person. Valentine's Day came to Amercia in 1629,adopted and continues today! Some of the symbols of the day are: Cupid-an angel from Roman mythology that would shoot people with an arrow and fall in love. Cupid is the son of Venus,"The Goddess of Love", Greek Mythology Cupid is known as Eros the son of Aphrodite "Greek Goddess of Love". Roses- the red rose is a symbol of Love and Desire! Hearts & Arrows- The heart is an expression of love and the arrow represents the possibility of rejection. In ancient times the heart was believed to be the part of the human body where all emotions came from. Lovebirds & Doves- Birds supposedly found their mates on the 14th of Feb. So the birds represented love through their behavior. Lovebirds are always sitting with their mates & snuggling together! Doves represent loyalty, since Doves stay together for their entire lives! Valentine's Day is a romantic holiday for couples to espress their devotion and love. Also platonic love is now celebrated with friends, siblings, children, teachers, and other significant people in someone's life! You can find some beautiful items to express your Love,Devotion at Susan's La Bella Baskets: http://www.mylabellabaskets.com/.susans.html

Make The Most & Best Of Superbowl Sunday!!

Like many of us out there, sometimes we feel in January that :We interupt this Marriage to bring you the Football Season! Whether you are invited to a Superbowl Party or are being the Host /Hostess you want to make the most out of what seems to have become a National Holiday!! I would suggest that if you are invited to a party that a host/hostess gift of some kind should be brought to the party. You may be asked to bring a certain dish or beveridge for everyone to share. But, something a little extra for the Host/Hostess personally would be a nice jesture. For instance, you could order flowers and have them sent ahead, with a note enlosed thanking the person for hosting the party. You could order a Football Themed gift basket and have it delivered to the person throwing the party or have it sent to yourself and bring it with you. A nice size snack basket or even a fruit or candy basket. As you can tell by now, I have an online store that sells gift baskets, gifts, candles & cookie bouquets. Even if you are throwing the party a beautiful basket or flowers that will last for weeks, will enhance the atmosphere and make your guests feel welcome! The main idea is to have a good time together with friends and family on Superbowl Sunday! URL to store is: http://www.mylabellabaskets.com/susans.html

The "Emergency" Gift Closet!!

Have you ever been really pressed for time or are suddenly handed a gift and have nothing to give in return? I have some tips for you on purchasing some "Emergency" gifts for what I call a gift closet. It really does not have to be a closet. A large plastic bin with a lid or a couple of empty drawers in a dresser can easily be used to "stash" away emergency gifts. Here are some ideas for what to collect. Candles, picture frames, small bud vases, silverplated coasters, stationaery or notecards, small photo albums, small crystal pieces. Now ,while the after Holiday sales are on, is a great time to pick up some bargains for you to have around  in your gift closet. You should not put anything perishable, such as food items or anything with an expiration date on it. Make sure you store everything in a cool, dry place. You can also put gifts in there to be re-gifted. Make sure that you have gift bags,or wrapping paper around. I find the best palce to get gift bags & wrapping paper is a dollar store. You sometimes can also find some gifts in a dollar store too. Little china trinket boxes, vases, statues, small photo albums.Just keep your eyes open, and when you think you have found something appropriate, don't hesitate, buy it because if you go back later someone else may have bought the item! By having these gifts put away for future gift giving, you will have built yourself a nice "Emergency Gift Closet"!
